BIKE BULGARIA ITINERARY

Dobre doshli (welcome) to Bulgaria. You will be picked up at the Sofia airport and transfer you to the local hotel. Hopefully you arrive early and get to explore the town for the afternoon while we wait for others to arrive. We will have a welcome dinner with everyone in town. Let the party begin!

We will hop on a 2.45hr transfer to the town of Bansko in the foot of Pirin Mountains. We’ll enjoy a welcome dinner at the family-run hotel that will be our accommodations for the first three nights of our trip. Our first day on our bikes will be a warm up day – we will enjoy a panoramic loop ride of the Razlog lowland, which is located between the main mountain ranges of the country, Rila, Pirin and the Rhodopes, combining some dirt roads with some quiet car roads that connect the small villages of Banya, Draglishte, Godlevo and Bachevo. Depending on how the group feels, we have the option to ride between 25 to 40 km today, with up to 500 m of vertical gain. Next, we will pamper ourselves in the thermal outdoor pools in the area and end our day with a traditional Bulgarian dinner at a restaurant in Bansko. Yippeee!!

We will ride in the Pirin Mountains today. Our route starts straight from our hotel with a good ascent of the northern slopes of Pirin, covered by conifer forests. We are touring the Gotse Delchev-Bezbog area, where we have an option to take a chair lift up to 2240 m and view some of the peaks and glacial lakes of Northern Pirin. A descent will take us down to the bottom of the valley of Mesta River, passing by some remote villages with gorgeous panoramas. Time to visit the old town of Bansko in the afternoon. Total for the day: 42km, +800 m. Don’t worry… we will have our support vehicle and we can pop our bike in and out of the vehicle to ride the best parts!

A 1.5hr transfer will take us to the shores of Belmeken Dam in the Rila range. We start our ride from the lake and will follow a high panoramic road that cuts the highest peaks of Rila. A final descent along an asphalt road will take us to the village of Yakoruda for a night in a small hotel. Total for the day: 44 km, +750m

Today we ride the narrow gauge train, transporting ourselves and our bikes up to Avramovo Station, the highest train station in the Balkans, where our trip in the Rhodopes starts. We will ride near the remote neighbourhoods of the Rhodopes and finally descend into the town of Velingrad for our accommodations, with the option to visit the thermal baths and pools of Velingrad. Total for the day: 25 km, +400 m.

Time for a rest day. We will travel through the Rhodopes until we reach the area of Yagodina village, where we’ll tour the Yagodina Cave on the way and hike the Gorge of Devin or the Eagle`s Eye panorama above Yagodina. Accommodations will be in a family-run hotel for two nights.

Today we will ride to the neighbouring village of Trigrad where we will visit the Trigrad Canyon and the Devil`s Throat Cave. We’ll return to the same accommodations in Yagodina. Total for the day: 35 km, 500 m.

Dovizhdane (good-bye) to Bulgaria and our incredible journey. If time permits, we will enjoy a sightseeing walk in Sofia.

We will transfer to the Sofia airport and say our goodbye to a wonderful country and its people.
